St. Gabriel’s Neighborhood Adult Center as quoted by many of our members/family: “it’s like home away from home"
The St. Gabriel’s Neighborhood Senior Center is governed by an Executive Board of Directors, who meets quarterly; the Board consists of seven persons with The Rector as President. Over the years, we have focused on Health, Wellness and General Care for the elderly.
The Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic brought us to a halt in Programming. As mandated by the Department for the Aging, all in-person services daily program services were shut down on March 16, 2020. We are still in shut down until further notice. During this period, due to the pandemic we have lost approximately eight members. Since March 2020, the Staff and I have collaborated on creating new ideas of how to continue interaction through the telephone socialization, exercise classes, telephone reassurance, current events and nutrition education.
We continue some in-person services, while practicing social distancing, as staff members come into work on Wednesdays, or as needed on other days of the week, to complete administrative work. We were able to conduct limited field study service interaction with a student from our community partner, Medgar Evers College. However, because of limited time, the student did not complete the required hours.
Currently we are without a full time cook and we are temporarily backfilling that vacancy with two of our in-house staff. These two staff members continue to attend the Department for the Aging Food Handler’s Protection Service Certificate Course, in order to be certified as Food Handlers.
We look forward to continuing the work of expanding our services to benefit of our senior community. Please join us!
