THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles (2: 42 - 47) Lois Newland
42They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43Awe came upon everyone because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. 44All who believed were together and had all things in common; 45they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, 47praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.
Psalm 23 (Lift Every Voice and Sing II, #279) ‘The Lord Is My Shepherd’ Choir
Refrain: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. (Refrain)
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. (Refrain)
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. (Refrain)
A Reading from the First letter of Peter (2: 19 - 25) Helen Walker
19It is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. 20If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God’s approval. 21For to this you have been called because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. 22“He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” 23When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. 24He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 25For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.
The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.
Sequence Hymn (Church in the Province of the West Indies, #664)
‘Loving Shepherd of thy Sheep’
Loving Shepherd of thy sheep, keep thy lamb, in safety keep; nothing can thy power withstand, none can pluck me from thy hand.
Loving Savior, thou didst give thine own life that we might live, and the hands outstretched to bless bear the cruel nails' impress.
I would praise thee every day, gladly all thy will obey, like thy will obey, like thy blessed ones above happy in thy precious love.
Loving Shepherd, ever near, teach thy lamb thy voice to hear; suffer not my steps to stray from the straight and narrow way.
Where thou leadest I would go, walking in thy steps below, till before my Father’s throne I shall know as I am known.

Refrain
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the people rejoice! O come to the Father through Jesus the Son and give him the glory; great things he has done.
O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood, to every believer the promise of God; the vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus a pardon receives. (Refrain)
Great things he has taught us, great things he has done, and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son; but purer and higher and greater will be our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see. (Refrain)

The Reverend Dr. Adam J. Shoemaker was elected ninth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island on 18th April by nearly 300 clergy and lay delegates, meeting at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City, New York. Shoemaker was elected on the fourth ballot by 95 votes in the clergy order and 76 votes in the lay order. The election required a majority in both orders on the same ballot, in accordance with the diocesan constitution. The bishop-elect will succeed the Right Reverend Lawrence C. Provenzano, who has served as bishop since 2009. Shoemaker said, “I am deeply humbled by the trust this convention has placed in me and accept the call to serve as your next diocesan bishop with hope and faith in what God will do among us. I look forward to laboring together across the Diocese of Long Island as one body in Christ, and I ask your prayers as we begin this new chapter together.”
To everyone who contributed to this process, committees, meet and greet gathering. Please continue to keep the diocese in your prayers during this period of transition.
