THE ENTRANCE RITE
(In preparation for worship, please be seated and remain in silent meditation, ensuring that all mobile devices are silenced.)
Organ Prelude ‘Venite adoremus’ (David Lasky)
Opening Sentence and Prayer
As the birth of a child draws near, attention focuses on the mother. Since we are nearing the celebration of the birth of Christ, it is no surprise to find that Mary is at the center of today’s Gospel. Mary’s only concern was to do the will of God. She will help us to do it also.
Entrance Hymn (The Hymnal 1982, #56) ‘O come, O come, Emmanuel’
Advent Wreath Ceremony: The Candle of Love
Celebrant Light and peace, in Jesus Christ our Lord.
People Thanks be to God.
Celebrant Today is the Fourth Sunday of Advent, and we will light the Candle
of Love. Last Sunday we lit the Candle of Joy. We light it and the Candles of Hope and Peace again as we remember Jesus, born in Bethlehem, our hope, our peace, and our joy.
The Candles of Hope, Peace and Joy are now lit.
Celebrant Today, we light the Fourth Candle of Advent, the Candle of Love. When the angel Gabriel told Mary that a special child would be born to her, she was filled with joy. She sang a song that began with the words: “My soul magnifies the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” Just as the birth of Jesus gave great joy to his mother, so his presence in the world gave joy to those who had none before. He healed them and gave them hope and peace when they believed in him. From hope, peace, and joy, grows love. We light the Candle of Love to remind us that when Jesus is born in us, we have love and that through him there will be everlasting love on earth.
The Candle of Love is now lit.
Celebrant Love is like a candle shining in a dark place. As we look at the light of this candle, we celebrate the love we have in Christ. Let us pray:
All Eternal God, you are the source of love. Thank you for loving us.
Your love is a source of great comfort to us. During this season of Advent may your
love reflect in our lives! May the work that we do illuminate the world with your
light and may the people that we meet see your love reflected in our words and
actions. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen
Greeting and Acclamation Prayer Book, page 299
Kyrie Eleison (The Hymnal 1982, S 91) Prayer Book, page 356
Prayer of the Day Prayer Book, page 212
Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
A Reading from the Book of Micah (5: 2 - 5a) Nash Fraser
2You, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. 3Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. 4And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; 5and he shall be the one of peace.
Canticle 15 (The Hymnal 1982, S 246) The Song of Mary Magnificat Luke 1:46‑55
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; * for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed: * the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him * in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm, * he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, * and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel, * for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
The promise he made to our fathers, * to Abraham and his children forever.
A Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews (10: 5 - 10) Stephanie Glasgow
5When Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; 6in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. 7Then I said, ‘See, God, I have come to do your will, O God’ (in the scroll of the book it is written of me).” 8When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), 9then he added, “See, I have come to do your will.” He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. 10And it is by God’s will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Sequence Hymn (The Hymnal 1982, #66) ‘Come, thou long expected Jesus’
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke (1: 39 - 45)
39In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, 40where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? 44For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. 45And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.”

A Blessed Advent and a Holy Christian New Year!
As we begin Christian Year C, we embrace the Season of Advent, the four weeks before Christmas, which is a time of preparation, waiting and hope. The Advent Liturgy resounds with the longing cries of the Hebrew Prophets, the voice of Jesus, and John the Baptist’s preaching. Among the customs of Advent, the wreath is the most important. The Lighting of the Advent Candles each Sunday, with a prayer, can prepare our hearts for the birth of God in Christ, at Christmas.
