Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE  LITURGY  OF   THE  WORD

A Reading from the Book of Genesis (28: 10 - 17)                          Michelle McKenzie

10Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. 11He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. 12And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13And the Lord stood beside him and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; 14and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. 15Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” 16Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it!” 17And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

The Word of the Lord.                                                            People    Thanks be to God.

Psalm (103: 19 - 22)                       Benedic, anima mea                                          Choir

Refrain: Bless the Lord, Bless the Lord, O my soul

19     The Lord has set his throne in heaven, * and his kingship has dominion overall.

20     Bless the Lord, you angels of his, you mighty ones who do his bidding, * and  hearken to the voice of his word. (Refrain)

21     Bless the Lord, all you his hosts, * you ministers of his who do his will.

22     Bless the Lord, all you works of his, in all places of his dominion; *

bless the Lord, O my soul. (Refrain)

A Reading from the Revelation to John (12: 7 - 12)                                Dianne Miller

7War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, 8but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world, he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming, “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. 12Rejoice then, you heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

The Word of the Lord.                                                            People    Thanks be to God.

Sequence Hymn (The Hymnal 1982, #618)   ‘Ye watchers and ye holy ones’

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John (1: 47 - 51)

47When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” 48Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” 51And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Sermon

Profession of Faith (The Nicene Creed)                                       Prayer Book, page 358

Prayers of the People (The Feast of Saint Michael and all Angels)             Lois Newland

In the power of the Spirit, and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. Father in heaven, by his blood your Christ has ransomed us to you and has made us a kingdom and priests to you, our God. As the angels’ minister to you in heaven, strengthen your Church to serve you here on earth. Lord, graciously hear us.

Father in heaven, when the angels greeted the birth of your Son they sang for joy ‘Glory to God and peace on earth.’  Bless with Christ’s peace the nations of the world. Lord, graciously hear us.

Father in heaven, hear our prayer for the concerns as listed in the Anglican and Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, Students at College, those serving in the United States Military. We pray especially for concerns affected by the ongoing wars around the world, continue to guide, protect, and keep us safe as we also deal with the effects of global warming. Lord, graciously hear us.

Father in heaven, your Son has promised to your children the care of the guardian angels who look upon your face. Protect by your mercy our neighbors, families, and friends. Lord, graciously hear us.

Father in heaven, we ask for all the blessing of this life especially on Tyrone Alleyne, Handel Andrews,  Ottalene Cumberbatch,  Vonette Hicks, Kathleen Rose, Evelyn RichardsVeronica Phillips, Geraldine Pierre, Denise Smith-Green, Lucille Smart, Michael Paul, as they celebrate their birthday this week.  Lord, graciously hear us.

Father in heaven, you give your angels charge over those who trust in you to guard them in all their ways. Be with those in trouble, rescue them and show them your salvation. Lord, graciously hear us.

Father in heaven, we pray that you will especially heal and support those listed in the Bulletin. Destroy any sickness that is, was and will ever be in their body. We pray that thereafter you will rejuvenate their mind, body, and soul, that they may be granted the strength to function in all areas of their life. Lord, graciously hear us.

Father in heaven, your angel declares ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.’ ‘Blessed indeed,’ says the Spirit, ‘for they may rest from their labors, for they take with them the record of their deeds.’  Enfold in your love all who come in faith to your judgement seat in heaven. Lord, graciously hear us.

Father in heaven, the angels sing by day and night around your throne: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty.’  With Michael, prince of the angels, who contends by our side; with Gabriel, your herald, who brings glad tidings; with Raphael, the protector, who ministers your healing; and with the whole company of heaven, we worship you, we give you glory, we sing your praise and exalt you forever.  Amen.

O when they crown Him Lord of all, O when they crown Him Lord of all; O Lord, I want to be among the number, when they crown Him Lord of all.

O when all knees bow at His name, O when all knees bow at His name, O Lord, I want to be among the number, when all knees bow at His name.

O when they sing the Savior's praise, O when they sing the Savior's praise, O Lord, I want to be among the number, when they sing the Savior's praise.
